how do you measure clothes to get waist and hip sizes? just wrap a tape measure around the inside? I've never found those stretched-flat measurements too useful, but I don't know the official method of taking measurements. Lots of ebayers asking for more specifics about my auctions, and I want to make sure I give them good information ...

I do'nt know, when I did it I lay the clothing down flat and made sure the hems were all even, then I doubled the measurement across. In instances when I couldnt' give an accurate measurement to 3 decimal places, I just told them what was on the label and if I thought it ran a little large or small, compared to how I was shaped. *shrug*

I'm not very helpful, but then I've never had anyone complain to me that my measurements were off :\

Yeah, I listed all of the sizes as they're marked and estimated if they ran small or large, but many people are asking for exact measurements ...

If it's a reasonably fitted item, you could just put it on and measure with a measuring tape. The hip measurement is widest part of the hip, which varies by person and doesn't help too much with A-line skirts, but you can guess. Get out the protractor and make them put their geometry skills to use - skirt flares at a 14.6 degree angle..... :)

I can do this with some things, but some of them are too small ...

Having a measuring tape would also help :)

you need to get a clothing measurer.

for the waist pin one edge of the tape (starting with 1inch) somewhere at the waist line of the pants (the waistline is the area you would wear a belt with or button together etc..) wrap the tape measurer around the waist in an even line until you reach the part you pinned. Because clothing is flexable I usually add 1" to the final measurement unless it's something i've sewn myself.

for hip you would do the same at the widest point of the hip area which is usually about 3" from the waist.

hope that helps

thanks!

one question about the right way to do hip measurements - is it supposed to be the part that looks the widest from the _front_ (side-to-side hip width), or is it the place with the largest circumference?
