interesting. when i lived in idaho, there were lots of stories of deer hunters who had mad-cow like symptoms and died. I wonder if the "sporadic" form is perhaps not so sporadic...

"Sporadic" my ass. It's pretty clearly established in reputable studies that a large % of Alzheimer's patients actually have CJD. And that CJD (not just nvCJD) can be caused by infected meat. I'd say that the death rate of thousands a year to BSE is probably accurate, although it seems to mostly affect the elderly.

It's not a crisis, but the authorities are either in denial or in cover-up mode.

I don't know anything at all about prion disease, but I wonder if this guy might have an agenda that he is pushing...

I certainly wouldn't put it beyond even vaguely peta types to try to use bogus scares to get people away from beef.
