Her: What about this piece here? *points to metal mesh bracelet with unfortunate large yellow stones which make the thing deeply ugly*

Me: That's nice, but is it available in a version without the stones?

Her: No, it's not ... see, mesh is new to you? But I'm a jewelry buyer? And I was seeing mesh fifteen years ago. And that would bore me.

Me: (repressing urge to reciprocate with rudeness, just raising an eyebrow instead) Ah, yes, of course.

At that point I had to turn away and look at stuff on the other side of the store. What an awful woman. Not to mention that I'm quite willing to bet I've been seeing mesh longer than she has, since at least three of my aesthetic traditions are intimately acquainted with it, plus my mom has a fantastic antique metal mesh bag which I'm always trying to borrow.

Well. Kind of funny now, but it sure wasn't at the time. Won't be going back to her store.

It was the Baak Gallery .. she has a serious attitude issue. I would have left instantly, but S had already gotten me a really nice titanium bracelet that was a little big, so we were there to exchange it ... so, we had no choice about giving her our business. Otherwise, no way.

Oh yeah! I have a tiny pair of white-gold hoops from there. When I bought them, the woman sniffed and said, "My very young daughter wears those."

I just gave her a look and handed over my credit card. She seems to lack a filter between brain and mouth.

yes.
well.

I won't be shopping there again, and would have just taken my money back if it had been an option.

And if she'd been polite (or even silent would have been better!) we might very well have gone back there ... we'd been eyeing some of their other stuff. Maybe in Harvard Square she gets enough business that she doesn't have to worry about driving people away.

I think the other woman there was kind of embarrassed.
