I'm not superstitious at all (except when it's late at night and I'm alone in the house and I start hearing noises), but I decided years ago that when I spilled salt, I'd throw some over my left shoulder. Actually I do it every time I use salt, even if I don't spill any. I think I just like the excuse to fling salt around.

It seems to me that if you do it when you haven't spilled any salt, then you are, in fact, spilling salt, and should do it again.
