Hmm .. my stuff from Apple arrived, and the laptop case I ordered is definitely not going to work - at least not without a separate padded sleeve, which I wasn't planning to buy. It's a really nice bag (the Kensington saddlebag), but there's not sufficient padding for a laptop at all, plus the Albook doesn't even fit in the compartment without sticking out the top. Not very cool considering Apple sells them through their own store marked "Fits all laptops!"

So I guess even with a sleeve, this would still leave the computer too exposed. I might just keep the Kensington for non-laptop use. But I still need to find something else. Too bad the Willow Design and Brenthaven bags are so expensive .. the Willow especially is very appealing since it also has the shoulder bag/backpack convertible option.

I bought a Targus Laptop Backpack. I'm going to be riding my bike to the train, so I needed something that would securely hold the laptop on my back. The only problem with the bag is how HUGE it is. I have the Dell D800, which is an oversized laptop (15.1" wide aspect monitor) and it fits just fine. More than enough padding. With that, I can fit all of the accessories (Hotswapable CDRW/DVD, power supply, CD's, mouse, etc etc), 2 programming books, lunch, a spare change of clothes (long story), and various other crap. It has the problem on the metro of knocking other people over, and weighing entirely too much when full.

But I love the bag. Very nice, well constructed. Though it may be a bit overkill. Also, not the most "profesional" looking bag. It's a backpack, and looks like one.

say what?! do we have the same bag? on mine, the padding is sufficient...have you tried putting the powerbook into the pocket with the back down (not the side down)?

how are you determining whether the amount of padding is sufficient?

when you open the bag does it have two open pockets? the back one is padded with an unpadded one in front of it...and a zippered compartment in front of that with a mesh pocket in front of that?

same bag. the albook doesn't fit in horizontally, just vertically, and that means it's able to move all over the place and the pocket's not tall enough for it. i think apple's being shady by listing it as "fits all laptops" because that's only true in the sense that a paper bag would fit all laptops.

there's almost no padding at all, so there's not much determining that I have to do .. it barely seems like a laptop bag. nice bag, but not protective at all. any bumps will be making way too much impact on the computer :( especially on top, where the albook sticks up above the padding.

:( i'm sorry. i measured mine and with a bit of stretching, the published horizontal size of the 15" powerbook would fit. it probably wouldn't slide in easily, but i tried fitting in similar-sized objects and they went it...

not your fault! I was relying on the apple store's description. though I'm surprised you feel like this is enough padding for your 12".

I managed to get the 15" in there once horizontally, with lots of difficulty. it really wrenches the bag and it took both hands, one knee, and all my strength .. not a workable solution.

the tibook might have worked a bit better in htere .. it's slightly thinner. there are bags that fit the tibook and not the albook.

I always found the best was to just get a padded sleeve and stick it in my courier bag/backpack.

Now I have this neoprene bag that has a strap but is very thin so I can carry it or stick it in a bag...but of course now that I rearranged my room this weekend I can't find it to tell you what it is...
