So I want to get one this fall. But the people I know at work who have TiBooks say the drives break constantly. Does this happen to yours too, if you have one?

I have two which I've been using for about 3 1/2 years with zero problems so far. I've been loathe to boot my PC since I first got one and I think in those 3 1/2 years I may have booted it 4 or 5 times.

The main thing you want to watch out for with buying a TiBook is that you don't want to buy one just before they offer the next best deal which seesm to be my habit. I've since learned to keep an eye out here:

<user site="livejournal.com" user="badtz2"> is the first time I've heard of trouble with a new Mac, (which is not to suggest I'm 'in the know' to begin with).

that didn't quite work:

www.macosrumors.com (http://www.macosrumors.com/) is where I look for news.

[livejournal.com profile] badtz2 is the first person I've known to have a problem with a new TiBook.

thanks, I'm glad to hear they aren't all that unstable. 2 people I work with have drives that they say break constantly ..

I had a pain with mine when I first got it. I had to send it back to get repaired twice and they wouldn't switch it for another one, but since then it's been ok. My problem was with the screen and the casing. So far no drive problems *knocksonwood* but I actually don't use it everyday so it's hard to judge.

As for [livejournal.com profile] langure's comment about getting the 'older one' Apple releases new versions atleast twice a year sometime 3 or 4 times. That and considering they never ship the newly announced one for 2-3 months means there's always something better just around the corner. But that's the same for all computers. Personally I feel Apple is well on the road to becoming as bad or worse than Microsoft...they just make a sexier product. What bugs me about Apple is that as soon as you buy it they don't give a f*ck about you or supporting the hardware you bought. So consider any purchase as disposable and not something that can be upgraded or supported more than a year in the future.

I deffinitely wouldn't hold out for a G5 powerbook as the first Gen computers always have some serious flaw.

Hmm ... I've had my G3 desktop for over 5 years with no trouble, but I guess the laptops do seem a little more delicate. Two people from work have drives that are "constantly breaking."

Yeah, there's always a newer model on the horizon. I won't be able to afford the G5 anyway, for a while ...

right, there's always a better one coming out soon but, for instance, the next version of TiBooks are actually supposed to not be titanium anymore, or at least less of it, so it wil be more sturdy. They're also supposed to do something different, anodyze the casing or something, so the paint doesn't chip off as easily. They're already made them so the keys don't touch the screen anymore. I guess my point was it depends on what the next version is offering that one should keep an eye on.

I've had no problem getting support for my G3 Powerbook, or my older G4 TiBook, neither of which have needed that much.

I think you're just jinxed. ;)

Not at all- not a single problem with it and I've had it for a year.
