Read a bit about bad academic writing today, which eventually led to this Orwell essay.
Never a bad time for Orwell.

You know, I had wondered for long time now what the context was surrounding Orwell's statement "Never us a long word where a short one will do."

Now I know. =) Good essay!

I've read strikingly similar essays in books on "how to write good SF."
My dad also complained about language, when I was in high school.
Of course, he's a linguist, so I put it down to professional pride at the time.

Yet, now I'm raising a child and I notice these problems are still with us.
