All this nasty red state vs. blue state stuff ... I don't get it. It just doesn't even make any sense .. the states are nearly all split roughly down the middle, just like the country itself. If you must be hostile and angry, be hostile and angry directly at the population whose votes you don't like, not at regions that are just as heterogeneous as your own.

i agree with your sentiments. but-- i'll admit-- i do get the anger, even though i don't want to, and it feels quite icky.

for me, though, my regretted nastiness with the red states is not so much about politics and behavior in the voting booth as about culture, (rigid) regional societal norms, and personal experience. encapsulated in the queer/minority bashing i witness every day, and the fact that [livejournal.com profile] st_theodora and i mostly get looked at like we are alien life forms for the simple act of holding hands when we are in VA, or even in some parts of DC, while in NYC, most of philly, CT, boston, or providence-- we are just people, like anyone else. that is the focus of my hostility and anger, not what people did on november 2.

in any case, though, i really am trying to get past it-- because it really does lead nowhere.

And as with so many times before; my comments to you are always rife with type-o's.

Forgive me.

It's what happens anytime people get angry or scared. Subtle nuances get thrown by the wayside, broad sweeping generalizations become the norm. People still need to vent, and when they vent anger they don't always do so in a logical manner.

I wonder if the 51% are pointing out these differences too?

Amen. Anybody should take some small measure of comfort in the fact that nearly wherever you go in the US, half the people there shared at least to some extent your assessment of who should be the next president.

Furthermore the gay marriage referendum results seemed to be the same regardless of region, though that's an profoundly unfortunate way of showing how people are similar across the US :(

he states are nearly all split roughly down the middle, just like the country itself.

Try living in Texas, one of the few places with big swaths of red, even on the purple county-by-county map (http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/). I suppose I have the consolation of noting that our neighbor, Oklahoma, was "more red". It's a very small consolation, considering the gross gerrymandering of our state and national representative districts.
