I wanted to make dinner with stuff from the garden tonight, so I started with a zucchini (the first one so far) and scallions with lemon juice and topped with shaved manchego. The first bite was great because I mostly tasted the flavorings, which worked pretty well, but then I realized that the zucchini itself was not so good. Hmm. Maybe the next ones will be better. So, I went with a soy-chicken burger with basil, sage, and oregano. That worked.

The tomatoes are coming along fast, so soon I'll have those to work with too.

i wish i could remember what i sent you tomatowise ... and i can't wait to hear what you think. I know the first 3 (or so) tomatoes on a plant are often bland or funny tasting, maybe that's the case w/ your zucchini? i've never had "bad" zucchini unless i let it get too big ...

Zucchini doesn't really taste like anything, in my experience. It's sort of the tofu of the vegetable world (that said, have you tried brushing it with olive oil and grilling it?).

My parents always used to grow it because it always grew, unlike practically everything else in our garden (something always has a bad year in Maine, except zucchini).

was it, perchance, a morningstar farms "chick patty"? they are yummy, especially when grilled.
