If you're trying to access a linux box from a solaris machine and get stuck in reverse video mode, do this before you ssh:
setenv TERM xterm-r6

Delhi (the capitol city of India), Agra (home of the Taj Mahal), and the "pink" city of Jaipur form a tourist route called the Golden Triangle.

This is not to be confused with the Golden Triangle in southeast asia, known for its trade in Opium.

a carbon window in an OS X app cannot host a WebKit browser unless there is a root control installed which the QT framework does not normally do when it creates a window.

Female big brown bats in Saskatchewan live in a collection of roosts in a single territory, but the roosts are constantly splitting up and reforming, switching to different trees and different roost-mates, or single bats might leave one roost for a while to go live in another, and then rejoin their original roost. Apparently, this behavior reinforces the sense of social connection among all the female bats in a particular territory, so that if a female bat found herself crowded out of her housing or her roost was destroyed, she could readily find a new place to live in another roost. A lone bat would freeze to death over the winter, so having a roost is vital. Bats that live in big caves don't have to do this kind of thing, but the only roosts available in that part of Saskatchewan are too small to accomodate the entire bat population.

A restrictive appositive is a sentence structure in which there is a further descriptor of the direct object that does NOT call for being set aside by commas.

Example:

Atalanta's ground-breaking paper What Went Wrong With Billy's Brain shocked and awed the scientific world.

(Wherein the title describes more directly the paper)

A regular appositive would be:

Mr Zero, a bespectacaled miscreant with a goatee, commits crimes with reckless abandon.

The town of Shippagan, New Brunswick (where the Acadian side of [livejournal.com profile] silentq's family is rooted) took its name from the Micmac word for "Passage of Ducks"

We did not see any ducks when we visited, but [livejournal.com profile] silentq swears that they lurk in the marshes, watching us pass by.

Naturally redheaded African-Americans have been in America for a long time, and are known in the South as "redbones." This brings to mind the ginger hair of Ramses II and other Egyptian mummies. I wonder what genetic connection, if any, exists.
